Duvel SUYT NY Winner
Duvel-SUYT Art Glass Design Competition: New York City Winner
In a special collaboration between Duvel USA and ShowUsYourType, facilitated and produced by kulturspace, graphic designers and artists worldwide are invited to submit designs depicting the name of a selected city using easily identifiable local iconography and graphic elements. The winning designs will be featured on Duvel’s iconic tulip glass as well as a series of promotional premium items such as posters, t-shirts, and coasters.
As the first of the four major metros selected for this competition, New York City attracted a series of colourful and vibrant designs during the month-long competition that ran from January 15 to February 15. After careful deliberation and review, Duvel USA has selected Sublenko’s unique portrayal of New York’s most iconic landmark with the ‘D’ overlay from the Duvel logo as the winning design.
The Winning Design: Liberty for All
“Darragh O'Hagan of Sublenko has brilliantly fulfilled the creative brief by combining an instantly recognizable New York City landmark, the Statue of Liberty, with Duvel's iconic red D logo. The glasses are already in production and will be seen in Manhattan's best bars and restaurants starting June 2019.” — Stuart Knight, Director of Import Marketing, Duvel USA
The Design Inspiration
When asked about the inspiration behind the artwork, Darragh O’Hagan says it’s rooted in the concept of liberty: the state of being free from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one’s way of life, behaviour, or political views. By infusing his interpretation of the Statue of Liberty with the Duvel logo in its original form, Darragh hopes to show a shared ethical stance by the two.
About the Designer
Darragh O’Hagan is a multi-disciplinary designer with a passion for delivering work that translates ideas into engaging commercial materials. A self-starter, Darragh founded his own design studio, Sublenko, after dropping out of his first year at university, preferring to take charge of his own creative destiny instead.
He has since built a diverse international portfolio through his award-winning work for Vodafone, Samsung, Grey Goose, Hilton, DHL, Guinness, HP, and more during his 16 years of creative experience. Darragh can often be found burning the midnight oil on passion projects purely as a labor of love and to keep the creative juices flowing. @sublenko
Paying It Forward
In addition to receiving a pack of Duvel promotional premium items featuring his design, Darragh also gets to direct a $500 donation to an NYC charity of his choice, made in his name via the kulturspace Foundation.
He has chosen to benefit Art Start: an award-winning, nationally recognized model for using the creative arts to transform young, at-risk lives. Art Start nurtures the voices, hearts and minds of New York City’s underserved youth through consistent creative workshops inside homeless shelters, alternative to incarceration programs, and partnering youth agencies.
